Teaser Tuesday

Teaser Tuesday is a weekly meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! All you have to do is:

  • Grab your current read
  • Open to a random page
  • Share two (2) "teaser" sentences from somewhere on that page
  • BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn't give too much away! You don't want to ruin the book for others!)
  • Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR lists if they like your teaser!
Here's my teaser:

Thousands of miles away, in a crowded theater that thunders with applause for the man onstage, hidden in the shadows formed between the disused pieces of scenery backstage, Celia Bowen curls herself into a ball and cries.

Claire heard someone yell outside the room, and Amelie whipped around so quickly that she was a blur, then moved...and something hit the marble pillar next to where she'd been and exploded with a sharp popping sound.
A bottle. Claire smelt gas, and then heard a thick, whooshing sound.

The stench of the prison rose up. I think this smell is not only filth - blood and excrement and decay - but is the smell of fear, of generations of people abandoned without hope of release. It never fails to terrify me.

She has devoured his throat and chest, and even some of his stomach. His open flesh gleams near-black, although there are varying degrees of the darkness indicating different organs. His lower intestines spill out of him, like escaping eels.
